Having  just started a three year term as head of the Visual Cultures department at Goldsmiths, University of London (you can read more about me here), I thought this would be a good moment to a begin an informal blog on some of the visual, cultural and theoretical issues that interest me at the moment. My starting-point, appropriately I think, is the topic of starting itself. So I’ll be writing about a range of loosely connected practices, places and phenomena relevant to this theme, a list that might include sketch books and studios, prologues and other introductions, five-minute interviews, private views, prototypes, opening sequences and establishing shots (classical filmic devices designed to set, and sometimes upset, a scene), maps, tour guides, and other entry-points.
